Dawki is a small town in West Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya, India and is a place to visit once in a life time. The crystal clear waters of the Umngot river and a boat ride in the serene surroundings is a treat of life.
One has the option of flying to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Borjhar, Guwahati, Assam and then travel by car to Shillong, Meghalaya which is at a distance of around 120 km; a 3 and half hours journey with a tea / lunch break at Nongpoh at a distance of 70 km and journey time of around two hours.
By train, the distance from Guwahati Railway station to Shillong is 100 km and travel time is around 3 hours.
Taxis including shared ones are readily available from Paltan Bazar, Guwahati which is just by the side of the railway station. One has to take the foot over-bridge from the railway platform to reach Paltan Bazar. If, one has pre-booked a taxi for the journey the taxi shall be available towards the Panbazar / Reserve Bank of India side of the railway station which is also the main entrance to the railway station.
The drive from Guwahati to Shillong is excellent through the hilly terrain with excellent road.
The distance to Dawki from Shillong is around 80 km and the time taken is three hours.
Most of the road through the scenic surroundings is good apart for the last 12/15 km prior to reaching Dawki; proving the saying said that all good things come for a price. These 12/15 will ruin all the pleasure of the excellent journey till the
The suspension bridge over the Umngot River known as the Dawki Bridge, was constructed by the British in 1932. This bridge joins two hills and is the communication to the Dawki Integrated Check Post, the border crossing between India and Bangladesh at a distance of 2.5 km from the bridge.
The Bangladesh side is called Tamabil and one will find lines of truck waiting for clearance to cross the border on the Indian side.
A visit to ground zero is a must.
The boat ride in crystal clear waters of the Umngot River can be undertaken from either the side before crossing the bridge and on the other side after crossing the bridge.
It would be better to take a boat ride after crossing the bridge. A better option is to directly proceed to the border point and then return back and undertake the boat ride.
Just experience the boat ride in the crystal clear waters amidst two hills and the people fishing in the waters.
The boat takes upstream below the bridge and one can disembark and have a walk and enjoy the beauty.
Tents are also available for night stay.
